Rev. Evan Kenneth Harney (Fr. Ken), born June 15, 1938 in Lexington, KY, died at the St. Christopher rectory, the Parish he loved, after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, February 20 at 9:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents Catherine Garlen and Raymond Harney and his brother, David Lynch and his sister Susan Lynch. He is survived by his brother, Gene Harney and his cousin, Gary Harney. He served in the Navy as a corpsman and retired after 22 years 9 months and 13 days. He then attended UNO, graduated and taught for 2 years in the New Orleans Public School System. He attended Notre Dame Seminary and was ordained on August 12, 1989. His pastoral assignments were St. Margaret Mary, Slidell and St. Christopher in Metairie from July 3, 1993 until present. Fr. Ken became Pastor of St. Christopher Church in July of 1999. He considered St. Christopher his home and the parishioners his family. His homilies were from the heart and always had a lot of humor. As a recovering alcoholic of over 30 years, he helped many AA members with counseling and a compassionate ear. The wake will be Friday, February 23 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at St. Christopher Church, Metairie. The Funeral Mass will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with visitation from 8:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Masses are preferred or Donations to Sister Servants of Mary or St. Christopher Parish Life Center.
